It started with a magician's parlor tricks. Kerchiefs that suddenly turn into multicolored ropes. Fluffy little animals coming out of hats. Tricks with mirrors that let you think someone is floating in mid-air.

Eventually, there were no longer any tricks. The magician could levitate. Really levitate, no gimmicks or mirrors. It was a quiet discovery. A secret. No one would believe him if he said he could. Or, if they did believe him, it was a childish fantasy. No one would take him seriously. So it was kept a secret for years and years, even until his death.

His children inherited his abilities, too. A penchant for tricks, the power to fly. His children kept it secret too. They were street performers-- who would believe them, too? They traveled around the world, earning a penny here and there from their sideshow gimmicks, their circus performances.

And they kept multiplying. Not every offspring inherited the abilities, but it was there. One or two would have the magician's gift. Some, the same. Some, entirely different. Flight, control of the elements, the ability to see the future, incredible strength. The magician's descendants had them.

And then, one day, it was no longer a secret.

With the magician long gone, his grandson's grandsons did not see the reason to keep it secret anymore. "The world needs to know we are here," they said. And so, the world first learned of the Magician's existence. Some were amazed. Some were afraid.

Soon, a war began.

I think I might expand on this. I have the world half-made in my head.
